Six Steps of Support

SUPPORTING DISTRESSED ATHLETES

 

It is critical that coaches and other critical figures in the athlete’s support system are aware of how to respond safely and effectively when athletes disclose distress. During the initial disclosure of distress, you should engage in the following six steps to provide effective immediate support and create a safe environment for the athlete:

 

Listen

You may use effective listening methods such as paraphrasing what the athlete has said to demonstrate that you are being attentive

Reassure

Help normalize the experience for the athlete by confirming that psychological distress affects everybody

Ask Questions

Ensure you understand the situation.

Assess the Severity

Assess quickly if you feel adequately equipped to manage the situation in-house or if due to the immediate risk professional support will be required.

Facilitate access to resources

Direct the athlete to the appropriate support resources, it is recommended for you to initiate contact with support resources unless the athlete expresses otherwise.

Remain Available

Follow up and keep the athlete engaged with team, It is critical for the coach to remain available to the athlete and extend invitation to partake in the team’s day to day activities.
